Nelson was appointed to the post of Berks County Treasurer on September 15, 2000 when Oscar C. Mogel died in office.  He is currently serving his second four-year term, as of January of 2006.  As Treasurer, Nelson has a staff of five full time employees, and a part time solicitor.
 

Nelson was born in Scranton, PA, and grew up in Nutley, NJ.  He has resided in Berks County for 28 years with his wife Patricia of 43 years and has two grown married children Melissa and Douglas and three grandchildren.  Nelson currently resides in Spring Township.  Nelson has one brother George and is the son of Mary E. Long and the late George H. Long.
