VOLUNTEER SERVICES
The Berks County Office of Aging through a network of agencies in the community provides volunteers services to help people of any age who are temporarily in need of assistance. Volunteers come from all over, and many are members of local congregations that assist with transportation, grocery shopping, companion visiting, and errands.
These volunteer services provide an array of opportunities for seniors to serve other seniors and their community at large, as well as meaningful opportunities for people of all ages to participate in providing services to older persons.
The Foster Grandparent Program provides volunteer opportunities for individuals aged sixty and older to work with children in a variety of community settings. Foster Grandparent volunteers must meet federally-established income criteria. The program is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service and is administered by the Berks County Office of Aging.
The Senior Centers Program provide many volunteer opportunities for seniors and people of all ages. Volunteers are needed in the centers and for the home delivered meals programs. Volunteers are an integral part of senior centers and without them, Berks County could not provide the 700+ meals on wheels each day to homebound elderly.
The Volunteer Ombudsman Program uses volunteers to make regular visits to area nursing homes and personal care boarding homes to interact with residents, provide information to residents about the Ombudsman program, and to act as liaison between residents and the Berks County Office of Aging Ombudsman Program.
The Volunteer Center of Reading and Berks County, part of United Way of Berks County, acts as a county-wide clearinghouse for volunteers. The Volunteer Center recruits and refers volunteers to local agencies.
