The Berks County Office of Aging was organized in 1974. It is the unit of county government designated by the Berks County Commissioners as the Area Agency on Aging. It is one of fifty-two Area Agencies on Aging in Pennsylvania. The agency is responsible for developing and coordinating a comprehensive service system to meet the needs of Berks County's older residents.
Initially, aging services were provided through a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare. On July 1, 1979, the Pennsylvania Department of Aging was established by the state legislature through Act 70.
