ASSAULT ON DEPUTY SHERIFF / CHARGES FILED
On September 18, 2017, the Berks County District Attorney's Detectives filed Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, & Disorderly Conduct charges against Andrew Spencer for an incident that took place in a courtroom in the Berks County Courthouse.
On August 10, 2017, during an active court session, Andrew Spencer (a Berks County Jail inmate) was present in Courtroom 7A for a criminal matter with his defense attorney. During that time, Spencer was speaking with his attorney off to the side of the judge's bench. The Common Pleas Judge was conducting court and was in the middle of taking a guilty plea for another case when Spencer became loud and disruptive, using profanity. Because of his disruptive behavior, the judge stopped the proceeding and ordered a deputy sheriff to remove Spencer from the courtroom and back to a holding cell. As the deputy sheriff was escorting Spencer back to a holding cell, he physically elbowed the deputy in the stomach and bit him on the arm. Spencer was eventually controlled with the assistance of additional deputy sheriffs.
The aforementioned charges were filed before Magisterial District Judge Stuart D. Kennedy. The defendant has not been arraigned yet on these charges, therefore, no bail information is available at this time.
