Brothers arrested for Illegal Trafficking of Heroin & Cocaine

In June of 2015, the Berks County District Attorney's Drug Task Force initiated a drug investigation in the area of the 400 block of North 9th Street and the 1700 block of Haak Street, Reading, Berks County, based on citizen's complaints concerning suspected drug trafficking in those neighborhoods.

Between June and August of 2015, an undercover Drug Task Force detective made several purchases of heroin from the suspects, Karla Romig and Juan R. Tiburcio. The transactions were made in the areas of the 500 block of Moss Street, 1700 block of Haak Street and other areas in the City of Reading.

On Tuesday, August 11, 2015, at approximately 12:30 p.m., the undercover Drug Task Force Detective placed an order of heroin from the aforementioned suspects via cellular telephone. The suspects directed the undercover to go to the 1700 block of Haak Street.

At approximately 12:42 p.m., a gray Toyota Camry with two occupants inside parked in the 1700 block of Haak Street. Subsequently, detectives arrested both occupants, Juan & Michael Tiburcio (brothers). Incidental to the arrest, both defendants were searches. Seized from Juan's possession was 19 packets of heroin (street value of $190.00), over $800.00 in U.S. Currency and two cellular telephones.

Seized from Michael's possession was crack and powder cocaine (street value of $580.00) and approximately $300.00 in U.S. Currency believed to be proceeds. Also seized from Michael's vehicle (gray Toyota), was 15 packets of heroin (street value of $150.00) and a cellular telephone.

Karla Romig was arrested prior to the arrival of the Tiburcio brothers.

Karla Romig, Juan R. Tiburcio and Michael M. Tiburcio were transported by the Reading Police Department to the Berks County Sheriff's Department Central Processing Center for processing and booking.

Arraignment was conducted by District Judge Gail Greth and bails were set as follows:

  • Karla Romig - $25,000
  • Juan R. Tiburcio - $100,000
  • Michael M. Tiburcio - $25,000

IMPORTANT NOTE: Juan R. Tiburcio was out on bail related to a prior drug delivery. Michael M. Tiburcio was on state parole for a weapons charge. Karla Romig has pending charges on an unrelated case. All suspects were transported to Berks County Jail.

The investigation is continuing.
