Child Abuse Arrest
On September 20, 2018, the Reading Police Department received a complaint regarding suspected child abuse. Officers were detained to a residence located in the 400 block of South 15th Street, Reading.
Upon arrival, the responding police officers learned that the victim, a seven (7) month old child had been assaulted by a male who was babysitting and providing care for this child. The child had visible bruises to the face as a result of the assault and was transported via ambulance to the Emergency Room at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center for medical treatment.
On Friday, September 21, 2018, the Berks County Detective's Office received a ChildLine Report of suspected child abuse and neglect which identified the victim as a seven (7) month old child.
On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, Berks County detectives interviewed the defendant, Juan Carlos Delgado. The defendant, who was babysitting at the time of the incident, admitted that he "smacked him in the face, really, really hard", at least two (2) times, because the child would not stop crying. The defendant further admitted that he held a blanket over the child's face for approximately five (5) to ten (10) seconds, in an attempt to stop him from crying.
On October 2, 2018, criminal charges were filed at Magisterial District Judge Carissa Johnson's office against Juan Carlos Delgado on the charges of Aggravated Assault, Endangering the Welfare of Children, Simple Assault, and Recklessly Endangering Another Person. Delgado is currently incarcerated at SCI Coal Township on other charges. He is expected to be arraigned at a later date.
