Charges: Endangering Welfare of Children - Parent
On May 18, 2017, officers from the Reading Police Department responded to 530 Mulberry Street, Reading, at the request of two Pennsylvania State Constables. The two constables were serving a warrant at that location. While serving the warrant, the constables observed a three-year old child alone in the residence. The child answered the door when the constable knocked on the apartment door. Berks County Children & Youth Services were contacted and took custody of the child.
Through additional investigation, detectives from the Berks County District Attorney's Office learned that the defendant left the child alone on several occasions, prior to May 18, 2017.
On July 11, 2017, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for the defendant, Carmen M. Wentzel from Magisterial District Judge William Hall. A short time later, Wentzel was apprehended by constables at 115 North 5th Street, Reading. Wentzel was transported to the Berks County Sheriff's Central Processing Center and arraigned by Magisterial District Judge William Hall. Bail was set at $5,000. She remains free on bail pending further court proceedings.
