DEFENDANT PHYSICALLY ABUSED FIVE YEAR-OLD CHILD

DETAILS OF INCIDENT:
 
On Friday, February 26, 2019, at approximately 11:19 A.M., Central Berks Regional Police were detailed to respond to 3200 Saint Lawrence Avenue, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, in response to an unconscious (5) five year old child.  Upon arrival the Central Berks Regional Police Officer located the five (5) year old victim who was unconscious inside the living room.  The victim was transported to Tower Health/Reading Hospital and Medical Center where she underwent surgery for a traumatic brain injury.
 
The Central Berks Regional Police Department partnered with the Berks County Detectives Office and the (2) two agencies conducted a joint investigation.
 
The Affiants interviewed the Trauma Unit Physician at Tower Health / Reading Hospital and Medical Center as well as Medical Doctors and professional staff at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. (C.H.O.P.).  They are all in agreement that the injuries suffered by the (5) five year old victim were as a result of significant and violent force.
 
On Friday, March 22, 2019, the aforementioned criminal charges were filed at Magisterial District Judge Sandra Fegley’s Office and an Arrest Warrant was issued for the defendant, Katherine S. Hallowell.
 
On Monday, March 25, 2019, at approximately 12:40 p.m., the defendant, accompanied by her attorney, surrendered to the Berks County Detectives.
 
The defendant, Katherine S. Hallowell, was immediately escorted to the Berks County Sheriff’s Central Processing Center which is located at the Berks County Courthouse. The defendant will be fingerprinted and photographed.
 
The Preliminary Arraignment and bail disposition are pending at this time.
 
As in every criminal case, the fact that an arrest has occurred or a complaint has been filed is merely an accusation, and the defendant Katherine S. Hallowell, is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
