In late September of 2018, the Berks County District Attorney's Drug Task Force Detectives initiated a drug investigation regarding the defendant, Manuel Perez. During the investigation, detectives learned that Perez was trafficking large amounts of heroin in the area of South 5th and Spruce Streets, Reading.
On Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at approximately 10:32 a.m., the Berks County Drug Task Force established surveillance in the area of South 5th and Spruce Streets, Reading. At that place and time, detectives observed Perez operating a red BMW X3 SUV. The vehicle was registered to Manuel R. Perez. Perez was wanted for verified outstanding scofflaw warrants. Perez was stopped travelling in the 300 block of Spruce Street where he was taken into custody.
As detectives removed Perez from the vehicle, they observed a large amount of drug packaging material inside of the vehicle. A further search of the vehicle was conducted and the following items were seized. 310 individual packets of Heroin (street value of $3100.00), four (4) cellular phones, packaging material, $290.00 in US Currency. This currency was believed to be the proceeds from the sales of controlled substances.
During the course of the investigation detectives identified Perez's current address as 322 North 4th Street, 3rd floor apartment and a search warrant was obtained for said address.
On Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at approximately 2:40 p.m., the Berks County Drug Task Force Detectives served the search warrant for the residence at 322 North 4th Street, Reading.
As a result of the search warrant, detectives found and seized the following items:
- Packaging material related to Heroin sales
- Several documents and identification related to Manuel R. Perez
- One Samsung Galaxy cellular phone
- Over $3,600.00 in U.S. Currency (believed to be the proceeds from drug sales)
The defendant, Manuel R. Perez was charged with Possession With Intent to Deliver of Heroin, Possession of Heroin, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Perez was transported to the Berks County Sheriff's Department Central Processing Center for processing and arraignment by the on-duty District Judge. Bail was set at $150,000.00. He currently remains in Berks County Jail.
