Male Sexually Assaulted Two Young Females

DETAILS OF INCIDENT:
 
On Friday, August 17, 2018, the Berks County Detective’s Office received a Childline Referral from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Human Services, relative to (2) two young females who were sexually assaulted at their babysitter’s residence.
 
The investigation was assigned to the Berks County Detective’s Office.
 
The criminal investigation yielded the following information.
 
The defendant, John M. Hammes, is currently (57) fifty seven years old.
 
The (2) two female victims were approximately (4) four and (6) six years old when the sexual assaults occurred between January and July 2018.
 
The (2) two victims were cared for by their babysitter at a residence located in Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania, between January and July 2018. The defendant, John M. Hammes, was often at the babysitter’s residence and would have direct contact with the (2) two victims.
 
During this time frame, there were periods when the defendant, John M. Hammes, was alone with and isolated each victim, providing him the opportunity to prey upon these (2) young girls.
 
Both victims were interviewed at the Children’s Alliance Center.
 
During these Forensic Interviews, both victims disclosed and described the sexual acts which took place in 2018 at their babysitter’s residence.
 
On Wednesday, January 2, 2019, the Berks County Detective’s Office filed the aforementioned criminal charges at Magisterial District Judge Steven Chieffo’s Office and an Arrest Warrant was issued for John M. Hammes.
 
On January 4, 2019, at approximately 0930 hours, John M. Hammes surrendered to the Berks County Detectives at their office.  Subsequently, he was taken to the Berks County Sheriffs Central Processing Department for processing.  Bail was set at $50,000 and he currently remains in Berks County Jail awaiting further court action.  
 
A Criminal Complaint is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
