Reading, PA 19602
Charges: Aggravated Assault, Simple Assault, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, Endangering the Welfare of Children
On May 7, 2013, detectives from the Berks County District Attorney's Child Abuse Unit initiated an investigation after receiving a report from the Reading Police Department relative to the physical abuse case of a 3 week old male. The baby was taken to Penn State Milton Hersey Medical Center with the following injuries that were potentially life threatening: fractured left arm, multiple rib fractures, and a fractured right leg.
During an interview with detectives, DeJesus admitted to inflicting these injuries due to his frustration with the baby crying. While lying on a bed, he reached over and grabbed the baby by the arm, lifting him off the bed. As this occured, he admitted to hearing a "snapping" sound. He then picked up the child to calm him down. While doing so, he forcefully squeezed the child, who finally stopped crying and appeared to go to sleep.
DeJesus also admitted to becoming frustrated with the baby on two other occasions. During those incidents, he squeezed the baby's chest with his thumbs causing the sound of "cracking knuckles".
On June 13, 2013, at approximately noon, DeJesus surrendered to detectives at the District Attorney's Office. He was taken to the Berks County Sheriff's Central Processing Center where he was arraigned and bail was set at $100,000.00. He is currently incarcerated in Berks County Jail.
