The National Weather Service and the Pennsylvania StormReady Advisory Board, have recognized Berks County as a StormReady County!
StormReady is a National Weather Service Program that addresses the need for higher level of community awareness in order to minimize the loss of life and property from episodes of extreme weather. StormReady encourages communities to take a proactive approach to improveing local hazardous weather operations and public awareness. While no community can ever be "stormproof", the StormReady program encourages communication and safety skills necessary to save lives and property - before, during, and after an event.
This StormReady designation indicates that Berks County has fulfilled a set of criteria that ensures everything reasonable has been done to provide for the safety of its citizens during adverse weather conditions, including thunderstorms and extreme heat. These criteria fall under one of the following six categories: 1) Communications, 2) NWS Information Reception, 3) Weather and Water Monitoring Systems, 4) Local Warning Dissemination, 5) Community Prepraedness, and 6) Administrative Tools/Record Keeping.
