County Bridge Projects
The following are major bridge initiatives currently underway in F&O (this list will be updated quarterly):​
  • Schaeffer Road a/k/a Blandon Bridge (53A)
    Maidencreek Township
    Schaeffer Road over the Maiden Creek
    ​The project will entail the complete replacement of the existing two-span structure with a single span, pre-stressed concrete spread box beam bridge with new abutments and pedestrian sidewalks.  The project is currently under construction, with an completion anticipated in December 2018.

  • Fisher Mill Road a/k/a Manatawny Bridge (58B)
    Oley Township
    Fisher Mill Road over the Manatawny Creek
    ​The project will entail the complete replacement of the existing structure with a single span, pre-stressed concrete spread box beam bridge with new abutments and widened shoulders to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists. The approach roadways will also be realigned in order to mitigate curves and line-of-sight issues at the bridge. The project is currently under construction, with completion anticipated in December 2018.

  • Hartz Mill Bridge (38A)
    Caernarvon Township
    Mill Road over the Conestoga Creek
    The project will entail the replacement of the existing superstructure and deck with select repairs to the abutments and approach roadways. The project is currently under contract with work commencing in spring 2019 and estimated to be complete by August 2019.​

  • Dreibelbis Station Covered Wooden Bridge Rehabilitation (46B)
    Greenwich & Windsor Townships
    Covered Bridge Road over the Maiden Creek
    The project will entail the full-scale rehabilitation and strengthening of the historic asset by removing the timber barn, augmenting the substructure with steel I-beams, completely rehabilitating or replacing the timber elements where necessary and reassembling the bridge. The project is currently completed with all design-phase task and is undergoing final Federal and State audits prior to bidding. This project is currently scheduled to be let for bids via PennDOT's ECMS system in October 2018, with construction commencing in Spring 2019.

  • Swamp Creek Bridge (40C)
    Colebrookdale Township
    Schlegel Road over the Swamp Creek
    The project will entail the demolition and removal of the existing asset in conjunction with the removal of a nearby Township-owned bridge and approach roadways. The project is currently complete with design and engineering and will be let for public bids upon completion of all right-of-way acquisitions. This project is currently scheduled to be let for bids via the County's Invitation to Bid process in November 2018​​.

  • Peach Street Bridge (10B)
    Kutztown Borough
    Peach Street over the Sacony Creek
    The project will entail the complete replacement of the existing structure with a new bridge with replaced abutments and pedestrian sidewalks. The project is currently in Preliminary Engineering and is navigating the cultural/historical clearances associated with the bridge's location and designation as a contributing resource to the Kutztown Historic District. This project is currently scheduled to be let for bids via PennDOT's ECMS system in December 2019.

  • Althouse Mill Bridge (45A)
    Exeter Township
    Gibraltar Road over the Antietam Creek

    ​The project will entail the widening and replacement of the existing bridge superstructure and substructure in order to coordinate activities with improvements to the adjacent Township intersection at Gibraltar and Shelbourne roads.  A turning lane will be introduced to reduce queuing and improve sight distances, and a four-way signal will be installed to better manage the flow of transit through this corridor.  Preliminary engineering has commenced on the project with no timeline for construction yet identified, though the project is anticipated to be completed by December 2021.

  • County Line Road a/k/a Burkey's Bridge (74B)
    Washington Township
    County Line Road over the NW Branch of the Perkiomen Creek
    The project will entail the complete replacement of the existing structure with a single span, pre-stressed concrete spread box beam bridge with new abutments and realigned approach roadways in order to mitigate curves and line-of-sight issues at the bridge. The project is currently in Preliminary Engineering and is scheduled to be let for bids via PennDOT's ECMS system in March 2019.

  • Zettlemoyer's Bridge (46G)
    Greenwich Township
    Long Lane over the Maiden Creek
    The project will entail a limited rehabilitation to the existing steel truss bridge to restore it to a minimum of 10 Ton posted weight limit. The project is completed with design, and is currently in preparation for re-bidding due to no compliant bids being received when originally bid in June 2018 . This project is currently let for bids via the County's Invitation to Bid process with construction commencing in spring 2019.

  • Ebling Memorial Bridge (56A)
    Muhlenberg Township
    Spring Valley Road over Bernharts Creek
    This project will entail the complete replacement of the substructure and superstructure of the roughly 60 year-old asset, currently weight restricted at 8 Tons except Combination 15 Tons and designated as Functionally Obsolete.  The new structure will meet current PennDOT design and safety standards as applicable and will be constructed in accordance with PennDOT Publication 408 while providing a context-sensitive design approach that satisfies all stakeholders affected by this project, including but not limited to local emergency responders, the Muhlenberg Area School District, the Township and adjacent residents​. ​

  • Glendale Bridge (43A)
    Douglass Township
    Winding Road over Ironstone Creek

    This fracture critical steel through girder bridge, originally constructed in 1906, is currently weight restricted at 12 Tons except Combination 21 Tons and designated as Structurally Deficient.  While rural in its setting the asset provides a critical crossing for local residents that would otherwise face a lengthy detour.  This project will entail the complete replacement of the substructure and superstructure of the asset.​  Preliminary engineering has commenced with no identified timeline for construction to date.

  • Wiley's Bridge (59A)
    Ontelaunee Township
    Bowers Road over the Maiden Creek
    The project will entail a limited rehabilitation to the existing historic steel truss bridge to restore it to a weight sufficiency to accommodate pedestrians and cyclists only. The project is currently pursuing grant funding for this initiative and the design and construction phases will be determined thereafter.
