Body

This interesting presentation will discuss the history of Irish contributions to the construction of the Schuylkill Navigation Canal System in the 1820's, and the thriving community they established at Port Union (now Douglassville/Unionville) which centered upon canal commerce. Some of presenter Capt. David R. Kohler's Irish ancestors were instrumental in this endeavor - and the deserted St. Paul's Mission Chapel; the former Black Bear Inn; and several residences and commerical buildings from this era still stand along Route 724 and the Schuylkill River.
