Every April, the Y celebrates Healthy Kids Day, our national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids. April is also National Kite Month, when the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department hosts "Go Fly a Kite! Day". The YMCA of Reading & Berks County and the County of Berks have joined forces to create one fantastic event combining healthy activities & information for kids and their families with kite-flying fun!
Kite Festival Activities
Make your own kite.
Contest judging begins at 3:30.
Children of all ages can join in the fun as they learn to make their very own kite and decorate it in the Sled Kite Workshop held throughout the day. Later on, they may fly their kite in the Sled Kite Contests to win a prize! Sled Kite contest divisions include: "Most Colorful", "Funniest", "Most Imaginative", "Highest Flying" and "Best Overall".
Kite contest registration begins at 12:00 p.m., contests begin at 3:00 and contest judging begins at 3:30 p.m. The Newspaper Kite Division is a contest in which eligible entries are made almost entirely of newspaper. Kites must be made from newspaper and must be able to fly. We look forward to seeing what shapes & sizes will appear in the sky this year!
Kites, banners and more will line the Professional Kiters Field and will be judged before the end of the day.
Professional kiters are encouraged to bring their homemade kites an enter them in the afternoon contest, for the following divisions.
