It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Police Chief, Lee Schweyer. Lee passed away unexpectedly in his home on Monday morning. Born on November 18, 1959, he was a 1977 graduate from William Allen High School, Allentown, PA. Immediately following high school he enlisted in the Army and received an honorable discharge in 1978. He attended Lehigh County Community College where he studied Criminal Justice from 1978-1980. Lee graduated from the Allentow...n Police Academy in 1985. He was a Kutztown University Police Officer from 1985-1988. On July 11, 1988 he joined the Sinking Spring Police Department. On June 1, 2000 he was given an accommodation by the Borough for his act of heroism for entering a smoke-filled building on May 19, 2000 and extinguished a fire. In Oct. 2004 he was awarded the first ever Berks County Hero award for rescuing an elderly couple from their burning home. On April 27, 2011 he was appointed Interim Chief and was later appointed Police Chief on December 1, 2011. Lee founded the Sinking Spring Borough’s Crime Watch and also organized the Borough’s Fallen Hero Memorial. He was also very active with the Berks County Chiefs of Police Association.
