DETAILS OF INCIDENT:
On August 26, 2019, the Berks County Detective’s Office received allegations of child abuse involving an employee at Creative Beginnings Early Learning Center, located in Bern Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. The employee (suspect) was identified as Andrew McCollin, hereinafter referred to as the defendant.
The Berks County Detective’s Office filed criminal charges against the same defendant on August 30, 2019, and September 5, 2019, and both cases are currently pending in the Berks County Court of Common Pleas. The victims in both cases were children who were enrolled at the same daycare.
On July 7, 2020, a forensic interview was conducted at the Berks County Detective’s Office with a third victim. During this interview, the victim disclosed that he/she was sexually abused by his/her teacher Andrew (Andrew McCollin). Detectives learned that the incident occurred between the dates of May 2018 through August of 2019, while the child was enrolled at Creative Beginnings Early Learning Center.
On August 10, 2020, the Berks County Detective’s Office filed criminal charges against the defendant, Andrew McCollin, at Magisterial District Judge Brian Strand’s Office and an arrest warrant was issued.
On August 11, 2020, at approximately 10:30 A.M., the defendant Andrew McCollin, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered to the Berks County Detectives. The defendant was immediately escorted to the Berks County Sheriff’s Central Processing Center to be fingerprinted and photographed.
The defendant was preliminarily arraigned before MDJ Strand. Bail was set at $75,000. Bail was posted the same day. He remains free on bail awaiting further court action.
As in every criminal case, the fact that an arrest occurred or a complaint has been filed is merely an accusation, and the defendant Andrew McCollin, is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
Detectives are continuing the investigation into other possible victims. If anyone has any information, please contact the Berks County District Attorney Detectives at 610-478-7171.
