DETAILS OF INCIDENT:
 
On February 4, 2019, the Berks County Detective’s Office received a Childline Referral from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Human Services, relative to the sexual abuse of a female when she was approximately (7) seven or (8) eight years old. The victim was (29) twenty-nine years old at the time of this report.
 
Additionally, the Berks County Detective’s Office received a report from the Reading Police Department after the victim filed her initial complaint with their agency. The Police report detailed the specific sexual abuse, timelines and identified at least (1) one location which was a residence located in the City of Reading.
 
On February 4, 2019, the female victim was interviewed by Detectives with the Berks County Detectives Office. The victim disclosed that she was sexually abused by the defendant, positively identified as Juan Eliezer Melo, over a period of several years. She recalls the abuse started around February 1997 and ended in November 2009.
 
The victim stated that most of the sexual offenses occurred inside the defendant’s residence which was located in the 300 block of W. Green Street, Reading, Pennsylvania, and would occur at night when other family members were asleep. The defendant also sexually assaulted the victim inside his vehicle as well as a local park.
 
On February 10, 2020, the Berks County Detectives Office filed criminal charges against the defendant, Juan Eliezer Melo, at Magisterial District Judge Alvin B. Robinson’s Office.
 
M.D.J. Robinson issued an arrest warrant for the defendant.
 
On March 20, 2020, at approximately 8:40 A.M., the defendant was taken into custody by members of the United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force, which is comprised of U.S. Deputy Marshals from the Eastern District, Berks County Deputy Sheriffs along with Pennsylvania State Police.
 
The defendant, Juan Eliezer Melo, was taken into custody in the 1900 block of Oregon Pike, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, without incident. He was then immediately transported from Lancaster to the Berks County Central Processing Center and released into the custody of the Berks County Sheriff’s Department.
 
The defendant was fingerprinted and photographed.
 
A preliminary arraignment was held via video by Magisterial District Judge Tonya Butler and bail was set at $75,000.00. The defendant was committed to Berks County Jail pending a Preliminary Hearing which will be held at a later date.
 
As in every criminal case, the fact that an arrest occurred or a complaint has been filed is merely an accusation, and the defendant Juan Eliezer Melo is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
