SCHOOL BUS AID CHARGED WITH ASSAULT​

DETAILS OF INCIDENT:
 
On May 13, 2021, the Berks County Detective’s Office received the first of (2) two Childline Referrals from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Human Services, relative to a school bus aide spraying students with a substance believed to be cleaning solution. The offenses occurred on the school bus while students were being transported.
 
The school bus aide was identified as Juan Dorta.
 
The Berks County Detective’s Office initiated a criminal investigation, which yielded the following information:
  
On May 14, 2021, the Berks County Detectives confirmed the actions of the school bus aide were captured by the video surveillance cameras installed inside the school bus. The video surveillance footage was turned over to the Berks County Detectives.
 
On May 19, 2021, the Berks County Detectives interviewed Victim #1, identified as a (12) twelve-year-old male. He disclosed that the school bus aide sprayed him in the eyes, face and mouth, causing him pain. He described the bottle as blue. He also stated the bus aide threatened to punch him.
 
The Detectives confirmed the blue spray bottle contained a glass and multi-surface cleaner containing active ingredients which can cause skin corrosion, as well as serious eye damage and irritation.
 
On May 28, 2021, the Berks County Detectives interviewed Victim #2, identified as a (10) ten-year-old male. He disclosed that the school bus aide sprayed him in the face with some sort of liquid which was inside a green spray bottle.
 
The Detectives confirmed the green spray bottle contained restroom floor and surface cleaner containing active ingredients which can cause acute oral toxicity, skin corrosion, as well as serious eye damage and irritation.
 
Both victims are students at New Story School, which provides educational and behavioral services to students in grades K-12. The school is located at 1245 Perkiomen Avenue.
 
On June 7, 2021, the Berks County Detectives filed criminal charges against the defendant, Juan Antonio Dorta, at Magisterial District Judge Carissa Johnson’s Office.
 
MDJ Johnson issued an arrest warrant for the defendant.
 
At approximately 1:15 p.m., the defendant surrendered by reporting to the Berks County Detective’s Office. He was taken into custody and immediately escorted to the Central Processing Center and released into the custody of the Berks County Sheriff’s Department.
 
The defendant will be fingerprinted and photographed. Bail was set at $1,000 unsecured.
 
As in every criminal case, the fact that an arrest occurred or a complaint has been filed is merely an accusation, and the defendant Juan Antonio Dorta, is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
