Sexual Abuse of Child

 
DEFENDANT:   Jonathan K. Rai (78 Years Old)

CHARGES:    Rape

                       Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse (2 Counts)

                       Sexual Assault

                       Corruption of Minors

                       Indecent Assault (2 Counts)

DETAILS OF INCIDENT:

On December 2, 2020, the Berks County Detective’s Office received a Childline Referral from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Human Services, relative to the sexual abuse of a victim who was identified as a (15) fifteen-year-old male.

The Berks County Detective’s Office initiated a criminal investigation, which yielded the following information:

On December 2, 2020, the Berks County Detectives assigned to this investigation, interviewed the (15) fifteen-year-old male, hereinafter referred to as the victim. During this interview, the victim identified the alleged perpetrator as “Jon Rai” and described him as a “70-year-old man” who was a close family friend.

The victim disclosed and provided specific details related to the sexual abuse which occurred (1) one time inside the defendant’s residence, located in the City of Reading. The defendant also encouraged and solicited the victim to send him nude pictures and videos of the victim’s (11) eleven-year-old stepsister. The victim did in fact send the defendant several sexually explicit pictures and videos of his stepsister in exchange for money.

The victim stated the offenses occurred during the summer months of 2020, prior to his 15^th birthday.  

On January 4, 2021, the Berks County Detective’s Office filed criminal charges against the defendant, Jonathan K. Rai, at Magisterial District Judge Carissa Johnson’s Office.

Magisterial District Judge Johnson issued an arrest warrant for the defendant.

On January 7, 2021, at approximately 8:00 A.M., the Berks County Detectives took the defendant into custody in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The defendant was immediately transported to the Central Processing Center where he was released into the custody of the Berks County Sheriff’s Department.

The defendant was fingerprinted and photographed. 

The defendant had a video Preliminary Arraignment which was held by Magisterial District Judge Alvin Robinson who set bail at $30,000.00. The defendant was unable to post bail, therefore he was committed to Berks County Jail.

As in every criminal case, the fact that an arrest occurred or a complaint has been filed is merely an accusation, and the defendant Jonathan K. Rai, is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
