DETAILS OF INCIDENT:

On December 6, 2019, the Amity Township Police Department referred an investigation to the Berks County Detective’s Office which involved unlawful contact with a minor, who was identified as a fourteen-year-old male.

On December 18, 2019, Victim #1, identified as a fourteen-year-old male, was interviewed by members of the Berks County Detectives Office.

The interview yielded the following information:

The defendant, Matthew Thomas Schroeder, started contacting Victim #1, via SnapChat electronic communications through his cellular telephone, dating back to October 2019. During these communications, the defendant repeatedly requested pictures from Victim #1, specifically photographs of his genital area. Victim #1 declined and never disseminated any nude or explicit photographs or images to the defendant.

As a result of this investigation, detectives positively identified the defendant as Matthew Thomas Schroeder, who resided at 34 Winding Creek Drive, Douglassville, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

The Snapchat communications and requests between the defendant and Victim #1 started back in October 2019 and ended in December 2019, after the defendant blocked any further Snapchat communications with this victim.

On January 24, 2020, detectives served a search warrant at the defendant’s residence.

As a result of the search warrant, detectives seized a cellular telephone belonging to the defendant. The forensic examination/extraction yielded evidence related to the Snapchat communications he exchanged with Victim #1.

On February 14, 2020, Victim #2, identified as a sixteen-year-old male, was interviewed by members of the Berks County Detectives.

The interview yielded the following information:

The defendant, Matthew Thomas Schroeder, started contacting Victim #2, via SnapChat electronic communications through his cellular telephone, dating back to December 2018. During these communications, the defendant specifically requested nude images from Victim #2. Victim #2 declined and never disseminated any nude or explicit photographs or images to the defendant.

In January 2020, the defendant once again initiated contact with Victim #2 via Snapchat electronic communications and requested to engage in sexual activity with Victim #2.

Victim #2 also stated that the defendant is aware of his age as they both attended the same Berks County school district and the defendant was a few years ahead of him.

On April 21, 2020, the Berks County Detectives filed criminal charges against the defendant, Matthew Thomas Schroeder, at Magisterial District Judge Steven Chieffo’s Office and an arrest warrant was issued.

On April 21, 2020, at 9:15 A.M., the defendant surrendered by reporting to the Berks County Detective’s Office. The defendant was immediately escorted down to the Central Processing Center and released into the custody of the Berks County Sheriff’s Department.

The defendant will be photographed and fingerprinted.

Bail was set at $100,000 unsecured, therefore, the defendant is free on bail awaiting further court action.

As in every criminal case, the fact that an arrest occurred or a complaint has been filed is merely an accusation, and the defendant Matthew Thomas Schroeder, is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
